Palgrave Forest and Wildlife Area

Palgrave Forest and Wildlife Area

It’s a wet and drizzly morning, but off we go to Palgrave Foreset and Wildlife Area. Though both the Bruce Trail and Oak Ridges Trail run through Palgrave, this is largely a bike park. Keep a lookout for them as you go, and hopefully you won’t get caught next to a giant puddle.

We started in the middle of the park. There is a fairly large lot here with lots of parking, though I’m sure in peak season it gets pretty full.

Today, however, was not one of those days. Sully sits all alone in the lot.

We take to the gate to enter the trails, and we’re off with not a whisper of another human life anywhere.

The forested areas are quite nice, and less muddy than the open trails. We headed to the north end of Palgrave, following the Oak Ridges Trail.

You could also swear it wasn’t running under those pines.

The Oak Ridges Trail winds its way through Palgrave and then carries on outside the top left corner. We follow its path back through to the east end of Palgrave.

The north east corner hosts a boardwalk area, which may or may not have been closed for the season. Shhh.

Despite the grey skies, the view at the tip of the boardwalks was quite nice over the fields.

A small water crossing brings us down to the Bruce Trail, which cuts through the center of Palgrave.

And here is where we had our first encounter of other life, in the form of one big lovable mutt, an ankle biter that was more interested in going off-trail, and the rather pre-occupied human following them.

Somewhere down near another entrance of Palgrave the trail is actually marked as Oak Ridges.

From here we decided to take the bottom bike tract back to the other side of the park.

We’re glad we did, otherwise we wouldn’t have found this beauty.

I tried to mimic the faces but it didn’t turn out too well.

If I had a bike, this trail seems like it would be a lot of fun. Many small ramps to catch some air, and some seriously steep areas to catch some speed. But I recommend decent brakes, as most of those steep downs end in a hairpin turn.
